I must be asked at least once every day about the blood that is seen coming from bellybutton area of a newborn. It is often recognized by a parent on the opposing clothing as it rubs on the remnant cord.
The reality is that the remnants cord is left to rot away and as it continues to separate from the base, there is a bloody show.
Parents will often comment that there is a really foul smell coming from the remnant cord. This is rightfully so has once again it is rotting and should smell .
The cord is not touched or treated during the separation and rotting stage. As soon as the remnant cord falls off, hydrogen peroxide maybe dropped onto the area to get rid of the smell and blood
