If you have decided not to breastfeed, you need to be prepared with bottles, bottle nipples, formula and boiling apparatus. There are many varieties of bottles out there.
The best I have seen is an L-shaped bottle, such as the Playtex Advance, with an air escape valve that prevents the infant swallowing air. Like all plastic bottles, they need to be boiled in order to sterilize them. Check if your dishwasher has a sterilizing mode to save you boiling bottles.
A great variety of different-shaped teats are available to choose from. Often one is more suitable than another for your infant, and you may have to try a few types to find the one she prefers. The best orthodontically engineered nipple is the NUKĀ® nipple and it is probably the best first choice.
Check how fast the milk drips out of the nipple. Again this is another reason I like the L-shaped bottle because the air valve regulates the milk flow. An easy feeding schedule to remember is: 0-3 weeks 8-10 feeds daily of 2-3 ounces/60-100ml 1-4 months 6-8 feeds daily of 4-5 ounces/125-150ml 4-6 months 4-6 feeds daily of 30-40 oz/900-1200ml 6-12 months 3-5 feeds daily of 24-32 oz/720-960 ml
