There is a direct correlation between length of pregnancy and birth weight. One third of low birth-weight babies, however, are born at term.

Some factors that can affect a baby’s birth weight include the sex of the baby, status and race of the parents, prenatal care including nutrition and weight, multiple births, and maternal factors such as alcohol or drug abuse and illness.

These babies are often managed and treated exactly like premature babies because they have the same problems. So, now the problems begin: you have this wonderful baby, you are in a hospital, and now you have issues, questions, concerns and anxieties.

Guess what—they are only going to get worse, so you might as well enjoy this new chapter in your life. Here are some things, however, that you can consider that might help guide you and give you some reassurance.
